In 2024, Castlecor Potatoes made strong progress in reducing food waste, particularly in the volume sent to animal feed. The percentage of total waste diverted to animal feed decreased from 12.85% in 2023 to 9.15% in 2024, outperforming the milestone target of 11%. This reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to resource efficiency and waste minimisation.

The reduction was achieved through improved segregation practices and more strategic use of rejected potatoes. By identifying and diverting suitable potatoes for starch processing and peeling, Castlecor Potatoes was able to reduce the volume of waste classified as animal feed while maximising the value of its raw materials.

All planned initiatives under this target were progressed during the year. These included researching potential partners willing to accept rejected potatoes and exploring alternative uses for these potatoes that could benefit customers or other sectors of the supply chain.

This proactive approach not only reduced waste but also supported circular economy principles by finding new value streams for by-products. It also helped strengthen relationships with external partners and opened up new opportunities for collaboration.
