Kerrigan’s Mushrooms has demonstrated strong leadership in sustainable packaging through measurable improvements in 2024. The company successfully reduced the average weight of its mushroom punnets from 12.017g in 2023 to 11.74g in 2024, surpassing its milestone target of 11.779g. This reduction, achieved through the distribution of lighter punnets across all customer channels, reflects Kerrigan’s commitment to minimising material use without compromising product integrity.

A significant leap was also made in the recyclability of packaging materials. The percentage of punnets wrapped using recyclable film rose sharply from 27.57% in 2023 to 84.75% in 2024, exceeding the milestone target by 9.8%. This shift not only reduces environmental impact but also aligns with consumer demand for more sustainable packaging solutions.

In addition to material changes, Kerrigan’s Mushrooms streamlined its packaging design by transitioning from clear flowwrap with paper labels to printed flowwrap on several product lines. This innovation has the potential to eliminate up to 7.5 tonnes of paper annually, further reducing the company’s environmental footprint and simplifying the recycling process for consumers. In addition, the company maintained 100% recyclability of its punnets in 2024, meeting its milestone and reinforcing its dedication to circular packaging systems.
